Happy Women’s Day

I wish all our girls and mom’s a Happy Women’s day on Monday.

I reminded the girls at Assembly that the privilege of a holiday on Monday was hard earned by 20 000 women, of all races, who came together on 9 August 1956 at the Union Buildings to protest the abhorrent “Pass Laws”.  Their protest was peaceful.  They stood in silence for 30 minutes before breaking into a protest song.  This was unlike the violent protests that took place recently which caused death and destruction.  Our girls should honour the actions and achievements of these women by being assertive and not aggressive, by standing up for what we believe to be right, in a peaceful, constructive way which does not include meanness, bullying behaviour, bad language and exclusion. We should support one another as we are strong together.

Jars of Hope

Thank you to everyone who has started making their Jars of Hope. Some jars have been trickling into school which is lovely to see. If you have made a jar (or two, or six) you can start bringing them to school. The girls can place them on the table in the foyer. There seems to be some confusion about the difference between ‘soup mix’ and ‘soup powder’.

A portion of our donations will be sent to The Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities’, who are currently doing a soup drive. The balance will be distributed to community kitchens organised by Outliers. You may remember that we collect stationery for Outliers at the end of each year so Micklefield has already built a relationship with the organisation. The community kitchens supply lunches for school children in Nyanga. Families in Nyanga have been hardest hit by unemployment and school closures so our support would be valuable. The jars will be distributed to the children who can then take them home to their families, providing a meal to their parents, grandparents and siblings. Thank you for your support for this initiative. Every extra full tummy is a bonus and we appreciate your involvement and support.

FINANCE

A friendly reminder to all parents, to please ensure that they have updated the school banking details on their beneficiary payments to the new FNB bank account, as we are still getting a number of parents paying into the old ABSA account.  The ABSA bank account will be closed shortly.

Bake Sale for Victoria Hospital

Five girls in Grade 3 are doing a bake sale for the Grade 1s, 2s and 3s (only) on Friday 13 August at break-time. There will be COVID friendly treats and the treats will be priced between R5 – R15. Grade 1-3s are asked to please bring petty cash on the day.

COVID PROTOCOLS

We are acutely aware that the W-Cape is at the height of its third wave. Please be assured that we are following all protocols to the very best of our ability. Please support us in reminding your girls that masks must be worn correctly at all times, even when off the campus at sport and extra-murals. Please be extra cautious and keep to the Covid protocols in order to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

Please notify your class teacher, Jeannette Welgemoed and Sandi Blackbeard immediately if your daughter or any member of your family contracts Covid or comes into contact with a positive person.  Please supply as much information as possible so as to help with tracking and tracing and in order to be able to inform the rest of the class appropriately.

Please ensure that your daughter has a spare mask in her school bag every day as we seem to have a constant stream of girls needing replacement masks. This is becoming a costly affair and we would appreciate your support.

CORRECT WEARING OF MICKLEFIELD UNIFORM

Please ensure that your daughter is always correctly dressed whether she is in her formal uniform or sports uniform. This means that school shoes or takkies must be worn with the respective uniforms. This applies to when your daughter is at school and after school hours, whether it be a visit to the shops or anywhere else.  Our school is represented when our uniform is worn so it always needs to be worn correctly.

2022 TEACHING INTERNSHIPS

Micklefield is looking for two teaching interns for 2022, a Foundation Phase and an Intermediate Phase Intern. An advert was e-mailed to parents this past week. Please spread the word in your circles.

Sport & extra murals

The sport and extra-mural timetable for Term 3 is available under Resources, Sport. Please note the times and venues.

Although the new Government Gazette has stated that all non-contact and contact sport as well as choirs can resume with immediate effect, we are erring on the side of caution as we are in the height of this Covid wave.

We will continue with sport practices and include match play in these practices so as to be ready for when we play against other schools, towards the end of August.  Choir practices will resume on Monday, 16 August.

ATTENDANCE AT PRACTICES AND INJURIES

Since the start of the term the attendance at hockey and netball practices has been disappointing with some girls being off for genuine injuries or Covid related issues, but many of the girls have not attended due to minor injuries and some who have just not attended without even an excuse.  With a long absence of match play due to restrictions, our girls need to work hard to get fit for the upcoming season.  Sadly, not all of them are showing commitment to their team and the sport. This applies to cross country training on a Wednesday as well. We need to get match ready quickly, otherwise our participation against other schools will be sorely affected. Please support us in ‘toughening’ up the girls, getting them to push through and be true team players.

Micklefield’s new Media Centre was opened this week with great excitement from both teachers and girls. It is a wonderfully interactive and energising space that promises to be well-used and loved for many Micklefield generations to come. A huge thank you to everyone that has enabled this vision to come to life!
