SAVE THE DATE!

Save the date for the 5 KM FUN WALK at the magnificent De Grendel Estate on SATURDAY, 9 OCTOBER for an 08:00 staggered start. Hard copy sponsorship forms will be sent home next week and detailed information will follow regarding the staggered grade starting times.

We are very excited to be able to hold this whole-school outdoors event, the first since the pandemic started. We hope that many of our families will be able to join.

JARS OF HOPE  COLLECTION

Thank you to everyone who supported our Birthday collection drive. A fantastic number of 806 Jars of Hope were received! Thank you to Outliers for distributing the bulk of the soup jars to community kitchens in Nyanga who supply school lunches for children for each child to take home a jar to their families. The remaining jars have been donated to The Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities, who is currently doing a soup drive.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

We continue to be mindful that the Western Cape is still in the height of the third wave. We would like to remind parents of the following protocols that were sent to member schools by the ISASA Legal and Policy Unit this past week:

“We are still advising schools to observe the ten day isolation period regardless of vaccination status or rapid test result.

The  Standard Operating Procedure for covid cases in independent schools and ECDs and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) advise that if you were in close contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) but do not have any symptoms you can end home quarantine 10 days after your last contact with a person with COVID-19.

There has not been anything to suggest that the SA Department of Health endorses a 5 day period on the presentation of a negative test. All resources refer to a ten day isolation period. The NICD also maintain that “PCR testing remains the gold standard for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 infection” while rapid testing is best used in certain specific contexts.

The NICD website also explicitly states that: “People who have been self-quarantining, because they had contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 and have completed their 10-day quarantine period without developing symptoms, can return to work on day 11. There is no requirement to be tested prior to returning to the work. It is, however, recommended they continue to practice social distancing and good hygiene as a precaution and wear a surgical mask.”

HOCKEY: PRACTICES AND MATCHES

We will continue with practices as usual, but we will also be playing our very first matches for the year, starting next week!  All information will be sent via your class WhatsApp group including drop off and collection procedures as no spectators are allowed.  Please ensure that these instructions are followed in order for us to continue to be able to play matches.

Please click here for the Protocols for Hockey matches, also available on the Communicator under Resources, Sport.

As these are the first matches, coaches will be selecting teams on what they have seen at practices.  Teams and positions might change from week to week as the coaches see the girls playing in a real match situation.  Please trust the process and support the coaches in this matter.  If you have any queries, please contact Sandi Blackbeard directly.

Wednesday, 1 September: Inter-House Netball: Grade 3-7 at Micklefield from 13.00 – 15.00

This is compulsory for all Grade 3 – 7 girls, even the girls who do not play extra-mural netball.

An email has been sent out with all the information.

GOLF

(Above Left) Congratulations to Amani Shaik who participated in the SA Junior Golf Competition on 8 August and finished 3rd in her category. Amani is a member at the Rondebosch Golf Club and part of their junior programme. Very few girls take it up and she often finds herself competing against the boys!

weekly snapshots

Isla McNaughton, Rebecca Eedes and Sian Bennewith arranged a speaker from their organization Waves for Change. Tania Adr'i Majavie shared with the Gr 5&6s the important work that Waves for Change do by teaching valuable life skills through surfing to help them deal with childhood trauma and mental health issues.
Thank you to Grade 6 Entrepreneurs, Zinathi Mkosi and Unarine Malada, for helping the Grade 00s get their Pet Theme started. Their project, “High Hopes”, is collecting pet items for Mzinanda Animal Shelter.

Mrs Patel, Miss Seemann and Mrs Dey attended a training session with Thabang from HandsonTech. They learnt how to code and build some innovative robots. They cannot wait to use our very fancy Lego Robotics Kits with the girls!

The Grade 7s experienced their own  Midsummer Night Dreams in Drama this week.

Last hotdog duty for Bridget Williams, Sara Makin and Nomonde Skepe!

The Grade 7s had a busy Friday selling delicious baked goodies to raise funds for their gift to the school. Thank you to all who supported their efforts!
