Sports & Extra Murals

The Micklefield ethos is to enable full participation in sporting activities, to help pupils realise their full individual potential, and to emphasise excellence in a caring environment, whilst encouraging enjoyment, co-operation, and team spirit.

Micklefield offers an extensive range of sports and extra-murals. Although our facilities are limited for sport, the school still competes at a high level, participating in all the relevant leagues and inter-school competitions as well as an annual hockey tour. In order to accommodate our many teams, facilities close to the school are used. (For a small school we punch way above our weight!)

Sport is part of the school curriculum, and it is therefore compulsory for all girls from Grade 3 to 7 to participate in at least one winter sport during the second and third terms, with a particular emphasis on hockey and netball.

Summer sports:

Tennis (U11 – Open age group)
Gala swimming (U8 – Open age group)

Winter sports:

Hockey
Netball
Cross-country (U9 – Open age group)

Sports training in Grade 1 and Grade 2 focuses on skills, while competitive play takes place from Grade 3 onwards.

In summer all the girls from Grade 3 to 7 participate in a compulsory weekly sports hour after school, where they learn to play tennis. The game of rounders is also taught and played in this time. At the end of every year, the Grade 7 class plays a rounders match against the teachers – a long-standing tradition at Micklefield.

Private extra-murals on offer:

A number of private extra-murals are offered on the school premises:

  • Hip-hop
  • Ballet
  • Monkeynastix
  • Playball
  • Curious Cubs
  • Yoga
  • Junior Clay
  • Art Club
  • Drama
  • Living Maths
  • Tennis

School extra-murals on offer:

  • Creative Dance for Grade 0 (throughout the year)
  • Hockey
  • Netball for Grade 1 and Grade 2 (winter terms)

Micklefield is divided into three houses: Kingfishers, Robins, and Swallows. Each house appoints a Portfolio Head. These girls are responsible for organising their houses for the various sporting events – sports day, inter-house swimming, hockey, netball, and cross-country.

The inter-house sports day is a highlight on the school calendar. It takes place on a Saturday morning, normally in March, with the whole school participating. It is a unique and happy family event, with straight races, relay races, and fun races for each grade. It is a well-balanced morning of fun and healthy competition.
