We are very proud of Thea van Zyl (Grade 7) who won the South African leg of the International Peace Poster Contest which is sponsored annually by Lions clubs around the world. Thea’s poster was among more than 450 000 entries submitted worldwide for the contest under the theme, “We are all connected.” Thea’s poster advanced through to the district and national levels and was the winner in both consecutive judging rounds. Her poster will now advance through to the international level of the competition.
Thea is seen here with Groote Schuur Lions president, Sharon Wright, who was impressed with all of the Micklefield entries and the pupils’ expression and creativity.

The Grade 00 term ended with a Christmas theme and some fun Christmas activities with the mischievous Elves providing much excitement every morning!
The Grade 0s have had a very busy term exploring Spring, Life Cycles and Celebrations. They recorded their thinking on a Flow Map showing their understanding of the sequence of the seasons. The pet silkworms have all undergone a miraculous change – moths, flapping wings which don’t fly, mating and EGGS, EGGS, EGGS!
The Grade OOs & Os have had many discussions and stories around feelings, words to identify feelings, and comparing feelings to the weather. They have been using The Mood Metre to help them express how they are feeling at different times of the day and exploring language around emotional literacy. They have also been exploring likes and dislikes and what is common is that we like it when someone is kind to us and that happiness is a pleasant feeling.
The Grade 00 and 0 parents were invited to a very special musical showcase hosted by our talented music teacher, Mrs Fyvie. The girls rocked the stage for their first time at Micklefield! The energy was electric. Dancing, singing, percussion; what a variety of fun. The girls got their parents moving too!
The Grade 1s were very excited to show their parents some of the things they have learnt this year. They sang and dramatized stories and poems in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. They also played sweet sounds on the recorder, piano and violin. What a special day indeed. Thank you to all the parents for making the time to join us.
One of the Grade 2s themes in Life Skills is Celebrations around the World. Each girl gets a celebration and creates her own poster and oral (all by herself) to present to the class. Lots of fun was had with this project! The Grade 2s blew Miss Bergstedt away with their wonderful presentations.
The Grade 2s and 3s were fortunate enough to go strawberry picking this term. The weather was lovely as we picked the most delicious, juicy, red strawberries and explored the Helderberg Farm with a 1km hike. We spotted a huge dam, many baby leopard toads, and wonderful birdlife. The resident farm dog enjoyed our giggles and love too!
The morning of Market Day we were all so excited! The class was setting up the tables, everything was perfect. Sarrinah and Sarah had an ocean theme, Leah and Sofiya had a Harry Potter theme and there were so many more! All of the girls were getting along so nicely. This was the day we were all waiting for. Amy and Isabelle had the most delicious ice cream, and after the market day Amy went crazy, she was chucking the chocolate sauce everywhere, and the sprinkles were all over the place. Ava K and Kiasha were selling slime. There was glitter everywhere. We all helped to clean up at the end. After the market day we were all so tired. Our class was so successful, we all made so much money. Almost everything was sold out at the end of it. It was our first market day, and it went so amazing, but I don’t think it would have been so good without our amazing teacher, Mrs Keeton. Market day was so much fun!

Term 4 has been a term of research, exploration and creativity for the Grade 5s. Their challenge was to create their own personal heritage scrapbook and present an oral on this topic to the class. The number of diverse and unique family cultures and traditions was delightful to learn about, and the number of fascinating family members who have had to overcome so many obstacles in their lives was truly inspiring. What an amazing artefact to pass down to future generations!
Congratulations to the following girls and their art teacher, Mrs Schutz, on their incredible achievements in the Cape Town Art Eisteddfod this year:

Bronwyn Thompson kindly offered her time to do a photographic workshop with the Grade 7s. She shared her wealth of knowledge and the girls were truly inspired by her skill and passion. These are just a few of the extraordinary images taken by the girls.
We were treated to two very special evenings of music at the end of Term 3. Our girls performed with such poise and beauty. What a special journey it is to see how they have developed from those very first, very shaky notes to presenting musical performances that kept the audience enthralled. We are so proud of our young musicians. We do wish them well and encourage them to let music continue to bring them joy. Thank you to Bronwyn Thompson for these beautiful images.
Huge congratulations to all our music girls who entered eisteddfods and external music examinations this year. They have all done so incredibly well.

Congratulations to Tabitha Porter, Mia Willoughby and Sophia Trout who all entered the Trinity Drama Grade 2 Exams and achieved Distinctions.
The Grade 3 Open Day saw the Grade 3s perform the delightful poem The Marog for their parents after which we took to the stage to perform Julia Donaldson’s book The Troll which provides great opportunities to learn how to create scenes from a story. We ended the year with a favourite of all time: Streganona and The Magic Pasta Pot. Who doesn’t love a story involving magic and eating pasta!
The Grade 7s were keen to perform House Plays, but with little time in the year remaining, it was decided to enact one of Mr Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes as these are always fun and entertaining.
Congratulations to the following girls on their sports achievements:
The various Grade 7 Leadership portfolios have had another eventful term. Here are some of the initiatives that they ran:
ROBINS HOUSE
The Robins House Captains thought it would be fun to set up a photography competition and see all of the fascinating photos that the girls at our school can take. After three weeks of entry time, the results were in with a winner from each category. The three categories were ‘Bold and Bright’, ‘Cute and Cuddly’, and ‘Nurturing Nature’. We announced the results in assembly and each winner received a slab of chocolate as a prize. Written by the Robins Committee.
SWALLOWS HOUSE
This term, on the 5th of November, the Swallows House Captains hosted a movie evening, where we watched the Disney movie, Luca. The girls were given juices and popcorn, and organised themselves on their own blankets and pillows in the hall. The movie was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Written by the Swallows Committee.
OUTREACH
The Outreach Committee continued our Animal Collection for the Cape of Good Hope Animal Shelter, an organisation that is one of the oldest animal shelters of its kind in Cape Town. We collected a wide variety of pet items, such as blankets, toys, leads, beds and food. With a good response from all the girls at school, we have managed to collect many items that will be donated to the shelter in the upcoming week. Written by the Outreach committee.
CULTURAL
The Cultural Committee presented an insightful and engaging speech on the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali. We touched on the importance of this special day and the meaning behind its celebrations. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit words Deepa vali which literally means “a row of lights” This auspicious holiday, known in English as the “festival of lights,” is celebrated by Hindus around the world. In India it is a public holiday; with grand, colourful celebrations leading up to the day. Written by the Cultural committee.
The Grade 7s enjoyed their first and last outing of the year to the Save our Seas Education Centre at Dalebrook Beach. The morning kicked off with an inter-tidal zone informative presentation at the centre, where the girls learnt about the various marine organisms that reside and survive in this changeable environment. Thereafter, we headed off to the rock pools to explore and try to identify the creatures in this zone. It was time for a welcome splash in the tidal pool. We ended the day with a visit to Dalebrook Cafe where the girls enjoyed a bite to eat and some liquid refreshment.
There was lots of action and high spirits at the traditional game between the Grade 7 Fairies vs the Teacher Dominoes. Well done to the Grade 7s who won the day, with a final score of 40 to 30 end of year rounders game.
Farewell to the Class of 2021! We are proud of each one of you. Go well, keep in touch and remember that you are always welcome at Micklefield, the small school with the big heart!
FUN Day was another exciting day for the Foundation Phase girls. Although the weather was rather unpredictable, the spirit and energy levels were high! It was lovely to watch the girls participate in yoga, soccer and obstacle course fun. The juicy, sweet watermelon and water play was a great hit too.
Jeannette and the staff would like to thank the Micklefield community for all their support throughout the year. Wishing you a wonderful holiday and a peaceful and blessed New Year.
